Working with wood has always been my passion—so when it came time to choose a career path, there was no question as to what I would pursue. I took a less traditional path: unlike many of my high school colleagues, who pursued a traditional post-secondary education, I knew that the trades would provide me with not only a job, but a career. I knew that in time, with a whole lot of sweat and practice under my tool-belt, it would provide me with the chance to launch my own business. It was always a goal of mine to work for myself and to inspire others. I sought out a profession where I could be constantly learning, reimagining existing spaces in out of the box ways and ultimately build a brand doing what I am most passionate about—building custom homes.

I entered the Ontario Apprenticeship Program, out of high school, and became a licensed carpenter at the age of twenty-three. I had the privilege of working under the tutelage of many established builders, framing stunning custom homes from the ground up, until I launched Harvey Homes & Interiors (HH&I) in 2010.

One of the most unexpected gifts I have received as HH&I grows, is watching my crew–people that I have worked to mentor fresh out of the apprentice program, now running their own sites under my umbrella. Watching them go from green-carpenters, to highly-skilled craftspeople, has offered me immense pride. Not only do I get to spend my days bringing people’s dream homes to life, but I get to watch my crew as they live out their professional dreams: progression is our profession and we will not retire.
